Safer Internet Day 2026: Smart tech, safe choices

When: Tuesday, 10th February 2026

What: Safer Internet Day is an annual campaign promoting safer and more responsible use of online technology, especially for children and young people.

Theme: “Smart tech, safer choices – Exploring the safe and responsible use of AI.”

What is Safer Internet Day?

Safer Internet Day is held each February to encourage safer, more responsible online behaviour and spark conversations about online safety across homes, schools and communities. It’s recognised internationally, with a global day of focus on the second Tuesday of February.

Why this year’s topic matters – AI

AI is increasingly built into the apps and devices many of us use daily, so being able to make safe, informed choices matters for children, young people and adults alike. The 2026 Safer Internet Day resources focus on helping people understand where AI shows up (e.g. assistants, chatbots, AI features), how to use it responsibly, and how to respond if something online feels wrong or misleading.

Parents / Carers –

  • Talk little and often about what your child does online and keep the door open for them to come to you if something worries them.
  • Spot where AI is being used (search summaries, voice assistants, photo tools) and remind children that AI can be helpful but may be unreliable or collect data.

Young People –

  • Remember AI isn’t perfect. Check important information with trusted sources or a trusted adult.
  • Look for signs content might be AI-generated, especially if it seems shocking, too perfect, or not quite right.

Teachers / Educators –

  • Use the free age-group packs which include slides, activities and a whole-school assembly.
  • Share/adapt the school/college letter to help families continue conversations at home.
